Sodium Benzoate

¨  Synonyms: Benzoic acid sodium salt, benzoate of soda, natrium benzoicum

¨  Description: It is available as white granular or crystalline powder, having  slight hygroscopic nature.

¨  Taste: It has unpleasant sweet and salty taste.

¨  Odor: It is odorless, or having faint odor of benzoin.

¨  Solubility: Soluble in water, ethanol 95% and ethanol 90%, methanol.

¨  Acidity/alkalinity: Saturated aqueous solution at 25◦C having pH 8.

¨  Density: At 24◦C density is 1.497 – 1.527 g/cm3

¨  Osmolarity: 2.25% w/v aqueous having same osmolarity as that of serum.

¨  Loss on drying: Not more than 2.0%.

¨  Melting point: 410 ◦C

Functional Properties

¨  It is act as antimicrobial preservative.

¨  As a lubricant in tablet and capsule.

Applications

¨  It is used as antimicrobial preservative in pharmaceutical, food and cosmetic industry, at recommended concentration of

              0.02-0.5% in oral products

              0.5% in parenteral medications

              0.1-0.5% in cosmetics

¨  It is used as lubricant in tablet and capsule manufacturing.

Storage Conditions

¨  Sodium benzoate can be stored in an air tight container in a dry and cool place.
