Bio Assay Guideded Extraction and Fractionation of Euphorbia thymifolia
Mankind from the beginning relies on medicinal plants for the treatment of different diseases in various ways. Herbal medicines are said to be less toxic in comparison with other
therapies. Plants have medicinal properties due to the presence of various kinds of active ingredients. Euphorbia thymifolia belongs to the family Euphorbiaceae has a lot of applications in management of different disease.
Euphorbia thymfolia containing many active compounds including 3-O-galloyl 4,6-(S)-HHDP-d-glucose, Rugosin B, 1,3,4,6-tetra -O-galloyl-β-D-glucose, 1,3,4,6-tetra-O-galloyl-β-D-glucose, 1,2,3-tri-o-galloyl-β-D-glucose, 2,3-Di-O-galloyl-D-glucose, pedunculagin, 1-desgalloyleugeniin, eugeniin, corilagin, geraniin, bixanin, 5-desgalloylstachyurin, casuariin, isomallotinic acid, cymol, isopinocamphenol, limonene, 2,4 decadienal, A-caryophyllene, 2,6,6-trimethyl-1-cyclohexane-1-carboxaldehyde, safranal, 24-methylenecycloartenol and quercetingalactoside.
Traditionally it is used to treat inflammation, diarrhea, dysentery, amnorrhea, gonorrhea, antidote for snake bite, anti tussive, skin problems, acne vulgaris, pempigus vulgaris, leprosy, antibacterial, antifungal, antiinflammatory, antiasthmatic, anticancer, antidiabetic, alopecia and antiemetic. In literature some of these pharmacological activities are reported.
Analysis of these activities were carried out by using fresh Juice, aqueous extract, ethanolic extract as well as the fractions including n-hexane, ethyl acetate, dichloromethane and butanol.
Anti emetic activity was carried out with fresh juice at 1% and 2% dose, aqueous and ethanolic extract at dose 50, 100 and 200 mg per kg of body weight (mg/kg b.w). A good anti emetic response was observed in dose dependent manner for juice and extracts. Among the fractions the butanol at doses of 15 and 30 mg/kg body weight exhibit an excellent anti emetic activity.
Anti diarrheal study was carried out with fresh juice i.e 1% and 2% dose. Aqueous and ethanolic extracts were administered at different doses of 50, 100 and 200 mg/kg b.w dose. The dose was kept 15 and 30 mg/kg b.w for analyzing the butanol, dichloromethane, ethyl acetate and n-hexane fractions. A good dose dependent response came out for juice, extracts and butanol fraction. Dichloromethane, ethyl acetate and n-hexane were found ineffective. Anti emetic effect was found more prominent as compare to anti diarrheal response.
