Preparation and Standardization of 0.1 Normal Silver nitrate Solution

0.1 Normal Silver nitrate (AgNO3) Solution Preparation

¨  To prepare 0.1 Normal solution of silver nitrate (AgNO3) take 17 gram of silver nitrate in sufficient carbon-dioxide free water with proper stirring to dissolve.

¨  Make the volume up to 1000 ml with carbon-dioxide free water.

¨  Formula used

¨  Mass in gram

= Normality x gram equivalent weight x required volume

                                                             1000

¨  Mass in gram

                = 0.1 x 169.87 x 1000     = 16.98 gram

                                  1000

Standardization

¨  Accurately weigh about 50mg of reagent grade Sodium chloride (NaCl).

¨  Previously dried at 110◦C for 2 hours in an oven and cooled in a desiccator.

¨  Transfer it gently to a 150 ml conical flask and dissolve in 5 ml water.

¨  Add 2.5 ml Acetic acid and 25 ml of methanol.

¨  Now add about 0.5ml Eosin Y solution as indicator.

¨  Titrate with 0.1 Normal Silver nitrate (AgNO3) solution with constant stirring.

¨  Calculate Normality as follow

¨  Normality

= weight of sodium chloride taken(mg)

molecular weight of sodium chloride x ml of 0.1 M AgNO3 used

¨  Normality

= weight of sodium chloride taken(mg)

                           58.44 X ml of 0.1 M AgNO3 used
