Fractional Crystallization a Purification Technique
Fractional Crystallization
¨ Fractional
crystallization is a purification technique for compounds from a mixture.
¨ This
technique involves the mixing of compound with solvent.
¨ After
mixing the solvent containing the compound is heated and then cooled gradually
so that each chemical constituent of the mixture crystallize out gradually.
¨ In
this way each component is removed from the mixture in its crystal form.
¨ Natural
products are mostly present in crystal form naturally.
¨ General
processes used for crystallization include concentration, slow evaporation and
refrigeration.
