¨  Synonyms: Acacia gum, Arabic gum, Acaia gummi.

¨  Description: It is available as white to yellowish granules, powder or spray dried powder.

¨  Taste: It has a bland taste.

¨  Odor: It is odorless.

¨  Solubility: Soluble in water, propylene glycol

              and glycerine. Insoluble in ethanol (95%)

¨  Acidity: 5% w/v solution in water have a pH range of 4.5-5.

¨  Moisture Content: at 25◦C the moisture content is 8-13% w/w.

¨  Specific gravity: 1.35 – 1.49

¨  Viscosity: 100 cP at 20◦C of 30% aquous solution.

Uses

¨  It is used as emulsifying agent, suspending agent, binder in tablets and stabilizing agent.

¨  Emulsifying agent: 10 – 20%

¨  Suspending agent: 5 – 10%

¨  Pastille base:            10 – 30%

¨  Tablet binder:         1 – 5%

Applications

¨  It is used as emulsifying and suspending agent in oral and topical pharmaceutical preparations.

¨  It is often used in combination with tragacanth.

¨  Used in preparation of pastes and lozenges.

¨  Used as a binder in tablets.

¨  Also used in the formulation of modified release tablets.

¨  Acacia is also used in the manufacturing of cosmetics, food products and confectionary.

Storage Condition

¨  Powder acacia can be stored in an air tight container in a dry and cool place.
